Cybersecurity for Energy Grids
How can quantum communication or hybrid quantum-classical approaches strengthen cybersecurity for real-time communications in the power transmission grid without compromising operational availability, scalability, or cost efficiency?
VERBUND is looking for practical, realistic cybersecurity use cases in which quantum communication or hybrid approaches could provide measurable value for secure real-time communications in the transmission grid compared with established technologies.
Solutions should take real-world constraints into account, including environmental conditions affecting grid infrastructure, integration with existing systems and communication architectures, and the current scalability limitations of quantum technologies.
This challenge is of high strategic importance to VERBUND. Requirements for secure, reliable, and efficient grid planning, optimization, and operations continue to increase and are becoming increasingly relevant from a regulatory perspective. Potential benefits include building strategic expertise in emerging technologies, strengthening the resilience and security of communication systems, and improving the long-term efficiency and cost-effectiveness of grid operations.
Given the current maturity of quantum technologies, hybrid approaches that combine quantum and classical technologies are explicitly encouraged. The expected outcomes are exploratory and do not need to be production ready.
A promising concept should address the following aspects:
- Cybersecurity value: What specific security benefit does the approach provide compared with existing technologies?
- Integration: How easily can the solution be integrated into existing processes, communication infrastructure, and IT/OT environments?
- Operational impact: What impact does the approach have on availability, latency, reliability, and continuity of operations?
- Economic viability: How do the expected benefits compare with implementation effort and cost?
- Scalability: How can current technological constraints and limited scalability be addressed?
- Technology, regulatory, and market readiness: What future conditions would need to be in place for the approach to become viable in practice?
A successful outcome does not necessarily need to demonstrate an immediate advantage of quantum communication over classical technologies.
A thorough assessment of where quantum or hybrid communication could create value, which use cases are most promising, and under what technological, economic, and regulatory conditions deployment could become viable in the future would also be a valuable outcome for VERBUND.
